Steamview holiday cottage, Esk Valley, Grosmont, Whitby, North Yorkshire

The Area

Esk Valley lies at the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and this very special corner of North Yorkshire has one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. The North York Moors National Park contains the largest continuous area of heather moorland in England, and is a delight to see the open moorland views, which in late summer, explode into a vibrant bright purple, when the heather flowers bloom.

The moors are a walker's dream, and there are many books and guides to give details of walks of varying mileage and difficulty.

The fishing town of Whitby is just 10 minutes away, which is where Captain James Cook developed his seafaring skills, and where it is believed his vessel HMS Endeavour was built. Bram Stoker was so inspired by Whitby that he chose it as the backdrop for his classic novel "Dracula".

Goathland, otherwise known as Aidensfield in the TV series "Heartbeat", is just a few minutes drive away.
